The Beard Liberation Front the informal network of beard wearers had said that Tony Benn who has sadly died will be remembered for his important contributions to political life but he broke the mould image wise.

Benn’s image is associated with a pipe and mug of tea and in recent years he had a distinguished beard grown to avoid tiresome daily shaving.

However in 1969 Benn became the first post 1945 member of a British Cabinet to appear with a beard. Benn recorded in his Diary of August 19th 1969 that he had attended a Cabinet meeting with his new beard and Harold Wilson had opened the meeting by stating ‘ motions to move previous face are out of order’.
