Scrooge’s City of London office 182 years on

In Uncategorized on December 19, 2018 by kmflett

19th December is the 182nd anniversary of the publication of  Charles Dickens Christmas Carol. The central character, financier Scrooge, had his office in the City of London. It is generally thought that Dickens had in mind Newman’s Court off Cornhill near the Bank of England.

The above is a picture of Newman’s Court as it is today. As might be expected Cornhill and the Courts and alleys that run off it are in 2025 a prosperous, well to do and smart area. There is just one exception to that and it’s contained in the photograph above.

Immediately opposite Newman’s Ct on the other side of Cornhill is St Michael’s Church were Reform launched its Christian Fellowship on December 11th. An updated Christmas Carol for 2025 would surely see Scrooge in the Congregation.
