John McDonnell is 70
Former Shadow Chancellor and Labour MP John McDonnell is 75 today. Coincidentally on the other side of the Atlantic Bernie Sanders is 85 today:
While Sanders no doubt has been influenced by Marx, McDonnell is an unequivocal Marxist
Both men are veteran socialists with McDonnell’s activism dating back to the days of the GLC in the 1980s.
McDonnell has never run to be Labour leader but Tony Benn thought he could do a good job back in 2006:
Tony Benn’s Diary July 5th 2006. To the Campaign Group. John McDonnell wants to stand for the leadership of the Labour Party. I think that’s a good idea. He’s done a wonderful job in setting the Labour Representation Committee up. He’s doing meetings all over the country
Sadly like Sanders, McDonnell has never had a beard.
