Suella Braverman: Beyond Tofu & Culture Wars, the Right to Protest is under threat
A week after being sacked by the last Tory PM Braverman is back and can continue her discipline and punish regime on those exercising what was previously the democratic right to protest
When last Home Secretary, just over a week ago, speaking on the latest Tory Public Order Bill in the Commons on 18th October she read out some pre-prepared words designed to turn the whole thing into another Culture War:
it is the Labour party, the Lib Dems, the coalition of chaos, the Guardian-reading, tofu-eating wokerati and, dare I say, the anti-growth coalition that we have to thank for the disruption we are seeing on our roads today. I urge Opposition MPs and Members of the other place to take this second chance, do the right thing, respect the rights of the law-abiding majority and support this Bill.
But the hard right Home Secretary was actually introducing measures that are designed to take much of the democratic right to protest
Part of Braverman’s proposals include the ability to obtain an injunction against ‘persons unknown’ who are:
persons not presently taking part in a public procession or public assembly protest but who will in future join such a public procession or public assembly.
In other words people who the Government or police think may be thinking about a protest
As the socialist historian E P Thompson said, protest and survive
