Cricket Culture Wars 2023. Eton v Harrow at Lords to be replaced by ‘jolly’ for JP Morgan

The long running culture war about the future of the Eton v Harrow and Oxford v Cambridge matches at Lords has started again.

In 2022 the MCC Cricket Committee which says that Lords can only be used for 60 days during the summer backed down from the plan after 200 members called for a special meeting. Now the members are being balloted and asked to rank the matches they most value at Lords. Eton v Harrow was first played in 1805 and Oxford v Cambridge in 1827 but the Committee want to see finals of a competition open to all schools and Universities instead.

It has also said that three days given over to sponsors can’t be dropped because their financial backing is too important. Old Etonian and well known cricket commentator Henry Blofeld has told the Times (3rd January) that Eton v Harrow must stay over sponsors jollys.

There will be rounds in this Culture War
