Monday February 20th 5.30pm, Judy Greenway, ‘A Poet among the Social Reformers’: Elizabeth Gibson Cheyne, Suffragist, Socialist and Freethinker.
In the early years of the twentieth century, the English poet Elizabeth Gibson (later Elizabeth Gibson Cheyne) was one of many so-called ‘young utopians’ participating in the ferment of new ideas about art, religion, poetry and politics. Her social networks included artists and feminists, Christian and ethical socialists, reformers and revolutionaries, Quakers and Rationalists, aesthetes and anarchists. This talk will discuss her engagement with the burning issues of the time, and look at how her identity as a poet became inextricably intertwined with her beliefs about how life should be.
