Tolpuddle 2023. Not just history. The Tories want to take us back to 1834

It sounds like a slogan but as a full Tolpuddle festival returns this week, Tory ideologues would be comfortable with a return to the days of the Martyrs.

Legislation to allow strike breakers during legal strikes underlines the Tories class hatred of working people combining to protect their conditions of employment has been found to be unlawful by the Courts this week after unions pursued the case. The Tories haven’t ruled out a further challenge and are continuing with legislation that would force people to work during a strike even though they had voted for it.

Employers combining to undermine strikes and unions is of course not an issue

The Tories disgraceful efforts  to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda underline that in the Tory mind  despatching ‘undesirables ’ to far-away places remains entirely acceptable

Tolpuddle 2023 is a celebration of our history and organisation but it’s  a reminder that the fights of 1834 will need to be fought again 2023 and beyond. Swearing an oath or two is allowed these days though
