The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that an attempt to reimpose a ban on beards in the New York Police Department (NYPD) won’t work.
In recent times a beard ban was relaxed for Sikhs and there is now more widespread facial hair in the force.
The head of the NPYD John Chell is reported as wanting to bring back the traditions of the NPYD.
The campaigners say that provided beards are well maintained opposition to officers wearing them is simply suggesting a fear of facial hair.
BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, like many police forces the NYPD has some concerning traditions. The more recent one of relaxing a ban on facial hair is not one of them. Unless beard patrols to check on officers facial hair are planned the ban won’t work
