February 15-16th: Shrovetide: ‘great gluttony, surfeiting & drunkenness’

Sunday 15th February is the start of Shrovetide three days of drinking, eating and indeed fun and misrule.

It exists across Europe, often called Carnival, Engels called it Mardi Gras (but swerved it) but in Britain the Church of England has managed to reduce all the festivities to pancakes and Shrove Tuesday
