The key issue: what are they eating at the Paris Olympics athletes village

One of the few features that the Times in the Murdoch era has retained from previous eras is the English ruling class obsession with French food. In recent times this has led to never ending articles about how the French are abandoning their traditional cuisine for fast food. France is indeed one of the world’s biggest markets for McDonalds.

Until quite recently McDonalds sponsored the Olympics but no more.

The athletes village is providing a (perhaps) more healthy menu.

The Times (23rd July) reported that a boulangerie had been built in the village to provide croissants, pain au chocolat and (of course) 800 baguettes a day.

Hot dogs and burgers will still be provided but again, obviously, using 100% French meat.

3 million bananas have been ordered.

The most in demand items are chicken skewers, salmon fillets and margherita pizzas.

Cheese is of course also on offer including Comte and Brie de Meaux.

There are special orders for particular countries. Korea has ordered kimchi, China sticky rice and Team GB porridge (very healthy btw).

There are also Michelin starred chefs who will cook a set menu of four dishes a day.

These include croissant, poached egg, artichoke cream, shavings of sheep’s cheese topped with truffle or veal in a veloute sauce enriched with cream and egg. For veggies there is chickpeas whipped into a pomade with verbena, served with beets, peas and seafood broth.

There is absolutely no mention of tofu.

What was not mentioned is that the whole operation is run by notorious global (but French owned) privateer Sodexo. Hence there have been numerous complaints ranging from the serving of undercooked chicken to too much plant based food. Numbers of athletes appear to have decided to eat elsewhere..

Bon Appetit etc….possibly
