Tory MPs reject Cleverly on the basis Tory members won’t vote for a leader with a beard
The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that with James Cleverly now out of the race to become the next Tory leader, Toriy MPs have rejected the option for only the third politician with a beard to fill the role since the formation of the modern Tory Party in 1834.
The other hirsute Tory leaders were Benjamin Disraeli who was an occasional beard wearer and Robert Cecil, Lord Salisbury, who was also the last Prime Minister of any Party with a beard. He stepped down in July 1902.
BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, one way of understanding the result is that on the penultimate ballot Tory MPs saw Cleverly as the best likely leader. However on the final vote clearly a view that Tory members will not vote or campaign for a hirsute leader has emerged
