The Guardian has reported that as Rachel Reeves pursues public spending cuts because there is apparently no alternative she has raised the spectre of Liz Truss to Labour MPs
The spectre she has in mind is apparently Liz Truss’ 2022 mini-Budget.
Others will wonder what Reeves may have been reading. The Communist Manifesto mentioned the spectre haunting Europe, by which Marx and Engels meant Communism. This is clearly not on Reeves agenda.
However the original English translation which appeared in the Chartist Red Republican paper in 1850 and was by Helen Macfarlane had it as ‘frightful hobgoblin is stalking Europe’ and in a way that seems to fit Truss rather well
