
Six years ago then PM Boris Johnson announced a full lockdown. On 16th March he had urged people to avoid pubs and restaurants and on 20th March ordered them shut,
Johnson as he made clear with his later ‘let the bodies pile high’ comment was an enthusiast for the then popular (with some) idea of ‘herd immunity’. There was no vaccine until (at the earliest) the end of December 2020. The alternative was a lockdown.
COVID had been spreading rapidly in London for several weeks, and a London lockdown had been mooted but not done.
Then again, as usual Johnson had not been giving the matter his full attention
In the crucial weeks before March (2020) Boris Johnson did not attend any of the five virus meetings held by Cobra, the emergency committee, in January and February and spent 12 days out of the public eye while on a ‘working’ holiday at (Chevening) in Kent.

That is why people will only be allowed to leave their home for the following very limited purposes:
- shopping for basic necessities, as infrequently as possible
- one form of exercise a day – for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household;
- any medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person; and
- travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home.
That’s all – these are the only reasons you should leave your home
