No Pope has worn a beard since 1700. Campaigners say it is time for change
The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said after the untimely death of Pope Francis, consideration must be given to the appointment of an hirsute Pope.
There is no bar to the Pope wearing a beard and canonical law is silent on the issue.
The reality remains however that no Pope has had a beard since the death of Pope Innocent X11 in 1700
