How did Stone Age men trim or shave their beards?
Michael Rosen whose beard is a frequent winner of votes for the beard that makes the most positive public impact has raised a beard related issue:
Fletty, intermittent fasting is inspired by prehistoric feeding patterns and there are health benefits, it’s claimed. But what about beards? Prehistoric humans didn’t have shavers. Huge health benefits, surely. Research needed.
The Beard Liberation Front’s Research Department has had a look at the issue.
There is no definitive evidence of how Stone Age men and women trimmed, shaved or styled their hair.
They did not have metal working skills so no razors were possible.
However this did not rule out a range of other strategies:
A sharpened flint
Obsidian, a volcanic glass has a very sharp edge, although it can cause cuts
Clams shells & sharks teeth. Both can be seen in Stone Age drawings but would have been very sharp
Tweezers. Ultimately hairs could be pulled out with a tweezer type device
BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, our research department has thrown up some interesting possibilities but they do seem to raise the point that just keeping the beard might have been the most sensible thing to do
