Beer in Ambridge 1945-2025

The BBC have broadcast two episodes of Victory in Ambridge to mark VE day, largely delivered by the 2025 cast.

Obviously The Bull featured, indeed the thatched roof caught fire and had to be replaced.

We heard a young Joe Grundy and Walter Gabriel whose catch phrase ‘me old pal, me old beauty’ was not delivered in such fruity tones as it was in more recent times.

Shires, a pale ale, was on sale at The Bull as it still is 80 years on (possibly at a slightly higher strength than in the 1940s). The Bull was also selling mild then (not now but time for a return surely) and there was reference, John Major style, to warm beer (12C) at the Bull.
