Historians back Peoples Assembly protest on 7th June. Austerity has a history
The London Socialist Historians Group which organises the socialist history seminar at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London has backed the People’s Assembly demonstration on Saturday 7th June.
The demonstration assembles at noon at Portland Place in central London and is focused on calling the Government to account for its Austerity 2.0 policies
The People’s Assembly came from a meeting at Westminster Central Hall in 2013 and has organised regular demonstrations since then. It has a broad focus which coalesces around welfare not warfare
The historians say they are particularly concerned that the austerity politics which arose after the financial crash in 2008/9 are still called out in 2025 with a sense that whatever Government is in office Tory/Liberal Democrat (2010-15) Tory (2015-2024) and Labour (2024-) an economic orthodoxy that promotes the interests of the few not the many persists
LSHG Convenor Dr Keith Flett said, many might have hoped that with the Election of a Labour Government austerity policies would have been consigned to the dustbin of history. While there are changes there is no decisive break from the past. A reminder that while Governments come and go the importance of protest maintains- it’s a central part of democratic politics.
