The long running Private Eye cartoon Its Grim Up North London features craft (now indy) beer taprooms in the current issue.
While Leeds police don’t get it, Private Eye is a satirical magazine, but satire only works if it has an element of truth to it.
Private Eye has a long (indeed very long) obsession about men with beards and to some extent North London, albeit many of the people associated with the Eye down the years have not been exactly strangers to it. One thinks of the late Peter Cook, Spurs fan.
Its certainly true that at least going back craft beer taprooms (say post 2010) were not the most comfortable of places. I still remember winter Saturdays at the old Beavertown tap at Tottenham Hale (10 years ago roughly) where the few of us who ventured in were warmly dressed because it was very cold (inside).
Beards and craft/indy beer remain a thing (see the barkeep above) and surely the challenge is out for someone to brew ‘beardies quadrangle’.
That said at least some taprooms are now really nice and comfortable spaces. I would mention the Kernel except its in Sarf London… Perhaps Five Points in Hackney then…
