Peter Mandelson (February 1998). Nobody Ever Said It Would Be Easy
Peter Mandelson is in the spotlight again because US Democrats have released a document that shows he was friendly with deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. While it can be appreciated that the UK media have in the main ignored this well known fact, Mandelson himself has confessed to it and noted that he wishes he had never been involved. That is considerably better than Trump has managed so far, but still begs the question of why Mandelson got involved with Epstein. One possibility is because he was ‘filthy rich’ (tax paying status unknown).
Mandelson was a significant Labour figure in the run up to and after 1997 and as Starmer’s Ambassador to Washington remains so.
The end of year release of official papers from the National Archives in 2021 included a significant number of documents from the early years of the Blair Premiership starting in May 1997.
One file-strategy- is largely the work of the then Minister Without Portfolio, Peter Mandelson. One suspects that in 2025 Mandelson still sees himself as a key Labour strategist but in 1997 he actually was (before the first of his several forced resignations).
I’ve copied below the opening para from a Strategy document produced in February 1998. Whether the message worked would require further investigation but it’s good to know that press conference backdrops required attention even then.
