Having had the post World War One mandate for Palestine until 1948 when Israel appeared as a State in the area, a process known as the Nakba, Britain finally got around to recognising the Palestinian State on 21st September 2025.
It is largely symbolic, and certainly it doesn’t in itself do anything about arms sales. It is however a marker of the impact of thirty central London marches for Palestine since October 2023, and of course a wide range of other protests.
On 22nd September the Palestinian flag was raised at the newly formed Palestinian Embassy in West London. Again its symbolic but also a moment of historical importance given the role that British imperialism has had in Palestine for over a hundred years now.
