What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding was written by Nick Lowe and performed by his then band Brinsley Schwarz in 1974. It was recorded in 1978 by Elvis Costello with a harder and more urgent edge to it, and produced by Nick Lowe
I was 18 in 1974 and the words spoke to concerns that war and particularly nuclear war could threaten. The Elvis Costello version underlined the alternative to war, death and destruction and over 50 years on from the original the words and the urgency remain relevant, just a lot more so.
