I drank in the first Wetherspoons (Marlers Bar originally) in Muswell Hill in 1979. Once Tim Martin took over his ambitions were to open as many Wetherspoons in the North London Borough of Haringey as he could. None still survive as Spoons and just a handful are still pubs (Haringey as two Spoons currently). Then Martin expanded into the rest of North and East London and into South London. Wetherspoons now have around 800 pubs in the UK and Ireland.
Given that Martin was a Brexiteer the decision to open a Spoons at Alicante Airport in Spain represents the triumph of business over ideology.
The food menu is an amalgam of the breakfast and post-midday menus. It does not however feature steak or gammon which were dropped some while back to a continuing chorus of disapproval from the usual suspects. The reason for the change was of course the high price of meat but the complainers in the main are not it appears people who venture into shops to buy their own let alone cook it.

Marvellous report Keith – We need to talk about Wetherspoons
I began a blog piece about this, We need to talk about Wetherspoons
back in checks notes … blimey it was 2023. Time flies, didn’t realise it was so long ago. So much to do.
Who are ‘the usual suspects ‘?
