The auction for the Hundred cricket competition, played in August, was held on 11 and 12 March in central London.
I’m not a huge fan of the Hundred which for cricket in general has lots of downsides. Nor am I fan of the client journalists who big up what is certainly no more interesting and exciting in cricket terms than other forms of the game.
This year was the first year when teams had franchise involvement and a lot more money was available.
Each of the eight men’s teams has £2.05 available while for the women it was £880,000.
There is meant to be progress towards equal pay but as in many other areas progress is not as fast as it should be.
BBC cricket commentator Henry Moeran posted on Twitter that the women’s game had made great progress and The Hundred is testament to that, arguably its one real success. Beneath his post was a stream of misogynistic comments most one suspects by male boomers*
The reality is that the women’s Hundred is often better cricket quality wise than the men. The boomers argue that its only there because most games are played as double headers with the men. Why not put women’s games on in the peak evening slot and the men in the afternoon sometimes and see where we go..
*full disclosure- I’m a boomer
