Big Beer moves to get control of more pubs

In Uncategorized on September 20, 2026 by kmflett

If you drink Murphy’s Stout, Birra Moretti or Beavertown you may be interested to know that you may be able to find the beers even more easily on the bar in UK pubs.

Heineken owns all three brands, along with many others. The Sunday Times (20th Sept) reports that its Star Pubs and Bars division which already has 2,350 pubs is bidding to buy 300 pubs from Stonegate. They are a bigger still pub operator who are looking to sell pubs to pay down debts.

If the deal goes through it will restrict choice on the bar even more.

What is to be done?

While not perfect (what is) the Campaign for Real Ale is currently running a campaign which addresses the demand for authenticity in beer. In this case Murphys is not brewed in Ireland, Birra Moretti is not brewed in Italy and Beavertown is not an indy craft brewer. Its comes out of a state of the art brewery in Ponders End.
