Emile Chabal will discuss his new intellectual biography of one of the foremost European intellectuals of the twentieth century: Eric Hobsbawm. In his book, Chabal offers the first substantial interpretation of Hobsbawm’s entire body of writing, and explores Hobsbawm’s place in — and relationship to — a remarkable network of Marxist and non-Marxist intellectuals, politicians and journalists. From jazz to peasants, Chabal traces the origins of Hobsbawm’s ideas by exploring his scholarly foundations, delving deep into the archives to uncover hidden links and unexpected conversations that shaped his pathbreaking work.
Emile Chabal is Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Edinburgh. He is a specialist of contemporary European political and intellectual life, with a a particular interest in France.
