Gone for a Burton?
Carlsberg Britvic have announced plans to close their Burton Brewery in Summer 2027 with 310 job losses. Historic and still popular cask ales such as Bass and Marston’s Pedigree are under threat.
We can of course see this as part of the process whereby capitalis mtends towards monopoly. Carlsberg has acquired a number of breweries and then closed them. Its not a straight theoretical fit since Carlsberg doesn’t see cask ale as competition but rather something that is restricting its accumulation of profit.
The question is posed particularly for those who are not shareholders in Carlsberg Britvic of what is to be done.
Action by Government, by campaigners like CAMRA, and by independent brewers as well as unions are all in the mix.
