One of the latest revelations to come out of ITV’s undercover investigation into Reform is that Farage defended a Reform candidate who said that former Deputy PM David Lammy should go back the Caribbean.
The remarks were made by a retired Rear Admiral Chris Parry. Reform officials wanted to get rid of Parry but Farage said this was difficult because he was a Rear Admiral and an apology, written by Reform, would do. Parry was eventually booted after he made anti-Semitic remarks.
David Lammy is my MP. He was born not in the Caribbean but at the Whittington Hospital in North London. He was brought up in central Tottenham 10 minutes walk from my Tottenham abode.
As the long time chair of Haringey TUC (I remain a delegate but have a honorary position) I worked with David Lammy over many years. There was disagreement over his support for the Iraq War in the Blair Government and his various roles in the Labour Government since July 2024 deserve in my view robust criticism.
He was however always willing to turn out and support trade union campaigns, even if his local presence was not always what it might have been.
Criticism there can be but the comments of Parry and Farage’s willingness to excuse them away underline the racism at the centre of Reform
