On 29th May 1968 French leader De Gaulle secretly left France as the student and worker protest that had brought France to crisis continued. His destination was a French military base in Germany where he sought advice on whether he should stand down and if the military would back him if he stayed on. He returned to France on May 30th 1968 which proved to be a turning point in his efforts to reassert his authority.
This week in the wake of the largest French protests since May 1968 Macron has left the country for Kuwait. Officially the plan was to meet the Emir of Kuwait to discuss fuel supplies.
Media reports suggest that troops will be on hand for continued French protests later this week. It will be interesting to see the reception Macron gets when he returns. Will the De Gaulle plan work twice?
