The London Socialist Historians Group, which organises the socialist history seminar at the Institute of Historical Research has expressed concern over a decision by the Home Office to ban climate academic and Palestine campaigner Andreas Malm from entering the UK.
Malm was due to speak at an event organised by Tribune, the long standing publication associated with the left of the Labour Party and beyond. He was also due to feature in a BBC Radio 4 programme.
LSHG Convenor Dr Keith Flett said, the ban on Andreas Malm is authoritarian over reach. It was something that Keir Starmer despite his human rights law background seemed to focus on. Andy Burnham is meant to have moved on. Banning a well known academic from speaking in the UK offends the principles held in the 1820s by William Cobbett’s Freeborn Englishman, and those principles still hold in the 2020s.
