The real story of the Chancellor’s Post-Budget speech pint

In Uncategorized on October 30, 2026 by kmflett

Chancellor John Healey visited the Two Chairmen pub in Westminster after his Budget speech for a beer.

The pint has attracted media attention, perhaps firstly because he downed the pint in (reportedly) 12 seconds and secondly because he held the empty glass over his head.

A Times Editorial (30th October) tut-tutted that this was not appropriate behaviour.

The real story is more interesting.

The beer was from a small independent brewery, Chantry, based in Rotherham, Healey’s Constituency. Chancellor’s Choice was on the bar as a guest (its a Greene King pub). Healey has previously visited and supported the brewery. It was of course a pint of cask beer. Drinking a keg beer so quickly while perhaps not impossible it would have been even more impressive.
