The Times Christmas Class War

In Uncategorized on December 19, 2024 by kmflett

There is nothing like a bit of class war at Christmas and the Times has printed an Editorial attacking the decision of the UCU to hold an industrial action ballot on pay in early 2025.

The outcome of the ballot will be decided not by the Editor of the Times but democratically by UCU members and the existing Tory laws on turn-out and success threshold will apply (it will be a good while before Labour’s Employment Bill reaches the statute book).

All of this is quite usual for the Times but the detail on higher education is of interest, simply for its ignorance. A good word is had for Vice Chancellors who if they were described as well paid might suggest a considerable degree of under statement.

Meanwhile University lecturers and staff are often poorly paid on precarious contracts.

Of course there is an element of anti-intellectualism about the idea of education, certainly promoted by the likes of Farage who went to a public school but did not do a degree getting his education such as it is from City of London wine bars.

Yet the reality is that the University employees who will determine whether to take action on pay are those who imparting and promoting skills of mainly young people across the economy and wider society. Without those skills economic growth is harder and social cohesion is damaged.

We are certain that all those on the list have in their various ways presented a positive image of the hirsute in the public eye. We expect the competition for the coveted Beard of the Year title to be bristling.

Reform UK Ltd. The Yorkshire Pudding & Christmas Dinner question

In Uncategorized on December 18, 2024 by kmflett

This week YouGov ran a poll about whether it is acceptable to have Yorkshire Puddings with Christmas Dinner or not. One might think that if the Roast Beef of Old England was on the Christmas dinner table this would be fine, but it would, perhaps, be a little unusual with Turkey or Chicken. It might not fit that well with a Vegan Nut Roast either and even Wetherspoons does not offer Yorkshire Puddings with any of its Christmas meals.

The YouGov poll found that 68% found the idea of Yorkies with Christmas dinner as completely acceptable. Looking at the breakdown by political party however 76% of Reform UK Ltd supporters found it completely acceptable the highest support by far.

There was a twist however. While just 4% overall found Yorkies with Christmas dinner completely unacceptable this rose to 6% with supporters of Reform UK Ltd.

As the July Election underlined YouGov polls are not that accurate but the details are here:

MICHAEL ROSEN & RICKY TOMLINSON SPLIT HAIRS IN VOTE FOR REAL ‘ORGANIC’ SANTA OF THE YEAR

While Michael Rosen posted on social media that he was proud to share the award with Ricky Tomlinson he also reasonably suggested a verification check on the vote as it was tied. Beard Liberation Front Scrutineers have checked the 5,700 votes and have a found evidence of a small number of votes from ‘Clean Shaven Santas’. These votes have been invalidated but made no difference to the result as they were distributed equally

The Campaign for Real Santas, which campaigns for Santas to have genuine organic or knitted beards, has said that author and broadcaster Michael Rosen and actor Ricky Tomlinson have split hairs in the annual vote to find the ideal organic Santa of 2024.

With a total of 5,700 votes cast both got 41.1% of the poll and the Real ‘Organic’ Santa 2024 title is split between them

The nominations for Real Santa of 2024 are:-

Ange Postecoglou, football manager

Lenny Henry, Actor

Michael Rosen, Author & Broadcaster

Ricky Tomlinson, Actor and Activist

The Campaign for Real Santas believes that only Santas with genuine, organic or knitted beards should be deputies for Santa, world famous for his organic beard, in the run up to Xmas

CFRS organiser Keith Flett said, We don’t know for sure that any of the people on the shortlist do help Santa at this time of year but we do think they are potentially excellent role models for real Santas as opposed to the absurd false bearded types. Both Michael Rosen and Ricky Tomlinson have iconic organic beards and the gravitas to be a genuine organic Santa

Luke Littler can be a future Beard of the Year

In Uncategorized on December 17, 2024 by kmflett

17th December

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that darts champion Luke Littler could be a future Beard of the Year if he continues to build a positive public profile for hirsute darts.

Littler, currently engaged in the annual Alexander Palace championships, came second in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Tuesday evening.

The campaigners say that its clear that Littler is still experimenting with beard styles and lengths to see which offers the best aero-dynamic advantage when throwing a dart.

However he has already inspired an uptake in darts interests for younger people.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, Luke Littler is not there yet but he could be a future Beard of the Year. He needs to focus on the darts/beard interface and in doing so promote a positive image for hirsute darts.

The 2024 Beard of the Year is announced on 28th December

The MP for Mar A Lago has been meeting a Constituent

In Uncategorized on December 17, 2024 by kmflett

Nigel Farage was elected MP for Clacton on 4th July. Its the final week of Commons sittings for the year and one would expect an MP to be around and perhaps involved with Christmas events in his Constituency.

However its becoming increasingly clear that Farage thinks he is the MP not for Clacton but for Mar A Lago in Florida, the base of Donald Trump

Farage was in New York at the weekend speaking at a Republican fund raising event (where Kemi Badenoch was barred for being too left-wing) and is clearly still in the US.

The picture shows Farage with Melon Usk, a far right activist and Nick Candy. Candy is described as the Treasurer of Reform UK Ltd but in reality its fund raiser. Friendly with Tony Blair and Boris Johnson (interview, Sunday Times 15th December) Candy seems to have decided that the interests of the very rich are now best promoted by Farage & Co.

The background is whether Melon Usk will be funding Reform UK Ltd. Given how much concern there is about foreign interference in UK politics it must be expected that prompt action will be taken if anything actually transpires.

Engels on Christmas 1889. Three weeks of eating mince pies & plum puddings

In Uncategorized on December 17, 2024 by kmflett

I trust Emma enjoyed the New Year’s cake as much as I have the
numerous German dainties I have been consuming during the past three
weeks over and above the obligatory plum pudding, mince pies, etc. For
we now have a gas stove, as our range has ceased to draw and the land-
lord hasn’t installed a new one. This transition from difficult to easy
cooking has put my old housekeeper into a real culinary frenzy and I
must now eat my way through the fruits thereof.

Starmer’s Christmas Message: A Permanent Arms Economy is the way forward

In Uncategorized on December 17, 2024 by kmflett

Starmer’s Christmas Message: A Permanent Arms Economy is the way forward

Keir Starmer is in Estonia where he will be meeting British troops who are in the ‘frontline’ against Russia. Leave aside the point that Britain is not at war with Russia and NATO should not be gathering troops on its border.

Its just the thing that British PMs do. In 2019 Johnson (20th December) was to be found ‘serving Christmas dinner’ to British troops in Estonia.

However Starmer also had an important wider point to make. While calling for more arms for Ukraine (a peace settlement however awkward is not something that ever appears on Starmer’s agenda). He noted

“Defence spending doesn’t sort of sit in a silo over here with no effect on the rest of the economy, no effect on technology.

“It has a huge effect on technologies, the cutting edge of technology and change, which can then be used in other areas.

Keir Starmer to visit British troops on Russia’s border | Keir Starmer | The Guardian

Broadly it’s what is known as the Military-Industrial Complex but what Starmer is really on about here is a permanent arms economy where war is central to the continuation of market capitalism.

In the 1980s Starmer had a dalliance with a post-orthodox Trotskyist grouping Socialist Alternatives but clearly did not come across the work on the permanent arms economy written by the heterodox Trotskyist Michael Kidron.

Anyway Starmer’s Christmas message is clear: Happy Christmas, War is NOT over

Bazball: the 2024 Scorecard. Won 9, Lost 8. Drawn 0

In Uncategorized on December 17, 2024 by kmflett

With England’s defeat by New Zealand in the Third Test at Hamilton the Scorecard for Bazball 2024 is now complete. England Men don’t play another Test until May 2025.

They lost 4 Tests against India, 1 Test against Sri Lanka, 2 Tests against Pakistan and 1 Test against New Zealand.

Alternatively they won 1 Test against India, 3 against the West Indies, 2 against Sri Lanka 1 against Pakistan and 2 against New Zealand.

There were no draws. We’re not quite at the end of the Men’s Test year but so far there has been only one draw in all Tests in 2024 a new low. It reflects in part the influence of the Bazball method beyond England but more particularly the impact of short form cricket now played a great deal more than Tests. Cricket is speeding up, which is not always ideal for those who remember the days of ebb and flow and a draw could seem like a moral victory
