Prince Andrew & the British Tradition of anti-Monarchism

Prince Andrew & the British Tradition of anti-Monarchism

The current discussion about what Prince Andrew may or may not have done in his dealings with an alleged Chinese ‘spy’ who seems to have been hiding in plain sight rather a lot for a spy is occupying the media and Sinophobes alike. It’s also a reminder of one of the great British traditions

A tradition of republicanism in Britain, whether defined on the left or the right, is difficult to pin down and mostly very much a minority trend. However sentiments of anti-monarchism have often been popular and sometimes part of the political mainstream.

We need only think back to the death of Princess Diana in 1997 to see all of these trends very much in the modern political mix.

Yet historically Britain- or more strictly given the date, England- can claim to have been first in the anti-monarchy stakes. It was after in Whitehall on 30th January 1649 that King Charles 1st had his head cut off and a Commonwealth under Cromwell was created. It lasted only to the restoration in 1660 and the work of modernisation had several more turning points from the Glorious Revolution of 1688 to something which almost was a revolution, the 1832 Great Reform Act.

It is difficult to sustain an argument that a genuine anti-monarchist tradition can be directly traced back to 1649, although if one looks at the efforts to ignore or play down the history of Cromwell and the New Model Army in many places in England- particularly churches and castles-it is obvious that the ruling class have never quite forgotten the significance of that day. Its equivalent in France is a national holiday. Not here.

Anti-monarchism was certainly alive in the early nineteenth century with the Queen Caroline affair and the wider traditions of republicanism was given a huge boost by the revolutions of 1848 across Europe.

It was this that sparked the left Chartist leader George Julian Harney to start his Red Republican journal.

The historian Antony Taylor makes the point that while it is often difficult historically to find a coherent and unified republican tradition the anti-monarchist movement is better defined and more popular.

In the anti-monarchist mind it was not the principle of a monarchy as such that was the problem but the behaviour of individual monarchs, how much they cost, and the whole aristocratic edifice of wealth and privilege that went with them.

In other words it was less an overt programme for political change and more a class movement, seeing the monarchy as a symbol of an unequal and divided society.

The popular critique of monarchy was an extension to the hatred of a society based on patronage and favour, the very real practice of Old Corruption.

As a mobilising political programme this had real strength long after the 1832 Reform Act and arguably up to the reform of the House of Lords in 1911 at the least. A focus on opposition to the aristocracy, including in practice the monarchy, united Fabian socialists and popular Liberals.

Reynolds’s the popular mass circulation radical working-class paper of the second half of the nineteenth century- it sold 350,000 copies a week in the 1870s- had anti-monarchism and stories relating to scandals about the Royals as a cornerstone of both its Editorial policy and its success in attracting a huge readership.

Papers more directly associated with the Labour tradition as the century drew to a close were more audacious and more politically direct still. The Clarion published, and gloried, in lists of aristocrats injured in hunting accidents.

Certainly historically anti-monarchism has been a significant feature of the British political landscape and Prince Andrew may, rightly, spark a revival

Socialist History Seminar Mon Jan 20th 2025. Tony Collins, Raising the Red Flag, Rethinking the Roots of British Communism

In Uncategorized on December 16, 2024 by kmflett

Seminar Monday 20th January 2025 In Person, Room 301 Institute of Historical Research, Senate House, Malet St, London WC1. 5.30pm. In person. Please book at this link as space is limited: https://www.history.ac.uk/events/raising-red-flag-rethinking-roots-british-communism

Tony Collins will talk about his new book which re-examines the rich and complex roots of the Communist Party of Great Britain. Using a range of original sources, he will investigate how the young CPGB was shaped by the experiences of the Social Democratic Federation, the Socialist Labour Party and the Workers’ Socialist Federation during the years of war, intense class struggle, and the rise of Labourism before 1920. Rather than being an imposition from Moscow, he will argue that the CPGB was an organic development of the British left, something that was both its strength and its weakness.’

Farage (in New York 15th December) delivers his version of Tomorrow Belongs to Me…

In Uncategorized on December 16, 2024 by kmflett

On Sunday 15th December Nigel Farage was not of course in Clacton but in New York delivering an address to the annual Young Republican gala dinner and fund raising event.

Details of what he said are awaited- although it can be surmised. It is perhaps sufficient to note that Kemi Badenoch was not invited because she was regarded as too left-wing…

The picture above suggests Farage may also have delivered his unique version of Tomorrow Belongs to Me but that is yet to be confirmed.

SHORTLIST UNVEILED FOR REAL ‘ORGANIC’ SANTA OF THE YEAR

The Campaign for Real Santas, which campaigns for Santas to have genuine organic or knitted beards, has named its shortlist of people who could be the ideal organic Santa of 2024.

The nominations for Real Santa of 2024 are:-

Ange Postecoglou, football manager

Lenny Henry, Actor

Michael Rosen, Author & Broadcaster

Ricky Tomlinson, Actor and Activist

The Campaign for Real Santas believes that only Santas with genuine, organic or knitted beards should be deputies for Santa, world famous for his organic beard, in the run up to Xmas

CFRS organiser Keith Flett said, We don’t know for sure that any of the people on the shortlist do help Santa at this time of year but we do think they are potentially excellent role models for real Santas as opposed to the absurd false bearded types.

An On-Line poll for the Organic Santa 2024 is now open, pinned @kmflett

Guidelines for the hirsute when eating Stollen

In Uncategorized on December 15, 2024 by kmflett

Beard Liberation Front

22nd December

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has been working on guidelines that will allow the hirsute to eat stollen without inadvertently turning their beard white with icing sugar and hence becoming Santa.

There is no definitive guidance as both stollen and beards come in different shapes and sizes.

However trials by the BLF have found that eating a stollen bite first broken up into smaller pieces with a fork which are designed to go in the mouth rather than the beard can work.

Contender for Beard of the Year 2024 Michael Rosen has suggested an alternative which may work just as well if not better:

Beard Safety Advice for Stollen Consumption, Fletty: 1. Don’t try to eat it with your fingers or smearing will take place. 2. The use of a single spoon or a single fork will not prevent dangerous spillage. 3. Knife and fork use essential.

The Ambridge Socialist. Farage is looking to play a farmer in the Archers

The Ambridge Socialist

15th December

Farage is looking for a farming role in the Archers

Nigel Farage appeared dressed as a farmer (flat cap, waxed jacket) or at least how he imagines farmers dress on a right-wing farming protest in central London on 11th December. Farage owns several properties in Kent but he is not now and has never been a farmer. It can only be concluded that after his appearance in I’m a Celebrity he is looking to play a farmer in the Archers. There is clearly scope for him to direct a tractor, driven by a GB News operative, over the rewilding area and then get to work on other ‘Woke’ Ambridge activities.

Pat & Tony’s 50th

Pat and Tony’s 50th wedding anniversary has been celebrated at the tea rooms. Tony reminded her that when he had met she was a Welsh cow hand reading Germaine Greer’s Female Eunuch. Those were the Ambridge days. Meanwhile Mick mistook a falafel for a scotch egg

Leonard has fallen of his electric bike

Leonard has fractured something after falling off his e-bike and has moved in at Brookfield. He will be able to sample the delights of Daveed’s lasagne..

Gavin is back: why…

Gavin Moss has returned to apologise to Lynda. The Ambridge Socialist suggests outsourcing the rest of this story line if there is any to the Moral Maze. Meanwhile a reminder that the original story was about modern slavery. Reparations remain due.

Beavers

Daveed has heard that Beavers are planned for the rewilding project. He thinks Beevers and Badgers are the same thing, after all their names both start with ‘B’. There could be trouble ahead.

Three Close Shave rounds of voting will determine the four best supported beard wearers of 2024 who will then compete in a final vote

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, every year the BLF team work to get a balance of people from across society and a variety of beard styles too. We are certain that all those on the list have in their various ways presented a positive image of the hirsute in the public eye. We expect the competition for the coveted Beard of the Year title to be bristling.

Cricket Bosses were told to address the equal pay gap in The Hundred. They made it worse

In Uncategorized on December 14, 2024 by kmflett

The ruling body of English and Welsh cricket the ECB was told to address the pay gap between men and women in the Hundred competition which runs in August each year. It is at best highly controversial and ECB bosses have just made it more so.

While the women’s Hundred has often produced higher quality and more competitive cricket than the men, the ECB has decided to increase the money paid to elite men players to try and attract more star overseas players. Top salaries for 2025 will increase by 60% from £135,000 to £200,000. The top salary for a women player will be £65,000

The overall salary budget for 2025 will be £2.3m with £1.2m going to the top 16 men’s players. The pot for women players will increase by £640,000.

Time surely for the Minister for Culture and Sport Lisa Nandy to intervene

Lest We Forget: Boris Johnson’s Christmas Parties. 18th December 2020 ‘this fictional party was a business meeting’. Police found rules broken

Lest We Forget: Boris Johnson’s Christmas Parties

Boris Johnson was until July 2022 the elected leader of a political party a job he didn’t really seem that interested in doing. By contrast he was and no doubt still is a great enthusiast for another kind of party-the one involving champagne and nibbles (tbh sausage rolls and crisps don’t cut it). Sonia Purnell’s biography of Johnson, Just Boris, has numerous accounts of parties he attended. A lot were thrown by his erstwhile employers the Spectator and the Telegraph. When he was married to Marina Wheeler and lived in Islington he was also, according to Purnell, a frequent attender at dinner parties.

When he was elected London Mayor in 2008 he threw his own parties(paid for by the taxpayer obviously) and in that year The Tatler described him as ‘party viagra’.

He did not deny that a Christmas party was held at Downing St in December 2020, the one that started off the whole parties investigation. The Daily Mirror published a picture of the Christmas Quiz which took place via Zoom on 15th December 2020 which clearly shows an open bottle of champagne. No problem with that except in the context of the times when COVID laws banned social mixing in London. It clearly was not really a work event either but a social quiz.

There were three parties on 17th December, two at the Cabinet Office & one at Downing St.

However the one that really brought the whole thing into public focus took place on 18th December 2020.

The BBC report:

Downing Street originally denied a report by the Daily Mirror that a party took place in Downing Street on this date.

However, a video obtained by ITV News showed the prime minister’s then press secretary Allegra Stratton joking about reports of the event, saying: “This fictional party was a business meeting and it was not socially distanced.”

Ms Stratton resigned following an angry backlash, saying she would “regret the remarks for the rest of my days”.

The police investigation determined that the event on this date did breach the rules in place at the time.

What though of pre-restrictions 2019. Johnson had just won an Election and was celebrating.

According to the perhaps not totally reliable source of Tom Bower (Boris Johnson, the Gambler) on Friday December 13th after returning to Downing St from Buckingham Palace where he had seen the Queen, Johnson headed to Brown’s hotel off Piccadilly. The hotel is owned by Brexiteer Rocco Forte and a celebration party was being held.

One party however was not enough for Johnson. He then went to Evgeny Lebedev’s ‘traditional’ Xmas party which was in his house overlooking Regents Park. Unlimited caviar and champagne were available. In 2020 Johnson made Lebedev a Peer..
