Jeremy Corbyn: the Haringey Years

Jeremy Corbyn: the Haringey Years

Below is an extract from Diane Abbott’s new biography which touches on her relationship with Jeremy Corbyn in the 1970s. The press have focused on Corbyn’s frugal lifestyle. He was reluctant to participate in what is now fine dining and a day out meant a visit to Marx’s grave at Highgate Cemetery. There is no shortage in the history of the left of this. The Islington North MP has an allotment in East Finchley, is keen on jam making and doesn’t drink. It actually sounds very much on message for 2024.

I was also active in the labour movement in Haringey in the 1970s. Corbyn was a Labour Councillor from 1974 until his election as an MP in 1983. I wasn’t in the Labour Party so didn’t run across him in Party meetings. There was however plenty of joint activity comprising the Labour left, the IS/SWP, Greens, community campaigns and trade unionists.

Diane Abbott is right it could be and often was an all inclusive life of political activism, particularly for those who were young, without other significant commitments. In this sense there were certainly other Jeremy Corbyns..

He was known as a brilliant organiser. He was the Labour agent for Hornsey at the 1979 Election including an effective canvassing system he had devised. He was also behind sorting out the fortunes of the old Wood Green Labour Club.

He is perhaps best remembered in this period however as the public face of the successful effort to oppose a march by the National Front in April 1977, known as the Battle of Wood Green. He was able to bring together those who wanted to make a peaceful protest and those who preferred a more robust approach (the march was broken as it moved out of Ducketts Common on to Wood Green High Rd).

Unlike many politicians one can think of Corbyn remembers and refers to that event as something positively achieved rather than claiming it was a youthful excess.

It was not inevitable that I would join the Labour party. Many Black politicos of my generation steered clear of it, believing the left tended to subordinate the politics of race to class politics. Instead, Black political activists of the 70s and 80s devoted themselves to community politics. If I had not been in a relationship with Jeremy Corbyn, I might have drifted away from Labour, but he drew me in and infected me with his love and enthusiasm for the party. I had never met anyone so absorbed by it. By day he was a full-time official for the National Union of Public Employees, the predecessor trade union to Unison. His evening and weekend

hours were taken up with being a Labour councillor in the north London borough of Haringey. Whatever spare time Jeremy had was consumed by being a volunteer organiser in various local Labour campaigns, and I could not help but get caught up in his whirlwind of activism.

Ambridge Socialist George is on bail. Solidarity with the Grundys & Horrobins

In Uncategorized on September 8, 2024 by kmflett

George aka Angus

8th September

George has at last been to the police to confess he was driving Alice’s car on the night of the crash. It was the fruit cider that finally led, not of course Sgt Knacker Burns, but Susan and Neil to work it out. George may as well ask for the bunting to be taken into account as well as the Post box fire.

It will of course cause a crisis in the Grundy and Horrobin families and the Ambridge Socialist sends class solidarity.

The episodes this week made gripping drama with great performances from the key characters not least Angus Stobie (George) who as his name suggests hails from Edinburgh

The Ambridge Undergrads

Brad is off to Felpersham and Mia to Newcastle. After a high level consultation on Lakey Hill with vegan food they reluctantly decide to put their special relationship on hold. Assuming both return to Ambridge on qualification a new generation of proletarian professionals will be with us.

Ian is keen, Adam is grumpy… Expect issues

Litter

The campaign to sort litter in Ambridge, which has the full support of the Ambridge Socialist, is gearing up. We wonder how many of Jazzer’s discarded Tennant’s Extra cans will be discovered…

Tribute paid to Moeen Ali’s Beard Power as he retires from International Cricket

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has paid tribute to England cricketer and Beard of the Year 2023 Moeen Ali, after he announced his retirement from International Cricket.

Moeen has been a key member of England cricket teams for some years and is in the top five of England all rounders making a decisive impact with both bat and ball.

His beard is iconic and there is no question that his Beard Power has contributed significantly to his success on the field.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, Moeen’s beard and England cricket have been the dream team. We hope he will continue to feature in other areas of the game

Inventing traditions. Charles & Camilla watch caber tossing at Highland Games

In Uncategorized on September 7, 2024 by kmflett

King Charlie and Camilla are staying at Balmoral in Scotland for their annual summer break which goes on until October.

On Saturday September 7th they were at the Highland Games which takes place near Balmoral. The event has a history stretching back 800 years but was reinvented in 1832 (the year of the Great Reform Act). The Royals have been attending since 1848 possibly a tradition invented by Queen Victoria.

Caber tossing, tug of war, throwing 28lb weights (not at Charlie) and Scottish dancing were on display.

All Our Yesterdays: Daily Mail launches another culture war on plant based food

In Uncategorized on September 7, 2024 by kmflett

The Tories lost the Election in July ending up with their worst defeat since 1832. It might be thought that the penny might have dropped that more or less their only actual strategy- culture wars- did not work except with the small audience for GB News.

Yet they are still launching new Culture Wars even though Lisa Nandy the Minister for Culture, Media and Sport has made it clear that the Government is not playing having more serious matters to deal with.

On September 7th a confected row about the interim England football manager not singing the National anthem at an obscure England football game was promoted by the Mail and Telegraph. England beat Ireland 2-0 btw.

Also on September 7th the same right-wing sources were attacking one of their favourite subjects the National Trust. Its the time of year when the Trust elects its national lay leadership. In recent years a group of weirdoes, the ‘Restore Trust’ has been trying to get support by the use of culture wars.

The latest focuses on the aim of making 50% of the food in NT cafes plant based. Its currently 40% so a rather modest change which one suspects must be popular unless the cafes waste lots of uneaten plant based food. The reference to scones is a perpetual and made up story btw. The recipe hasnt changed since 1066

World Beard Day: Beards have changed the world

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has marked World Beard Day which is on the first Saturday of September each year by focusing on beards that have made a positive impact past and present.

These include Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, William Morris, W G Grace, Sigmund Freud and in the modern era Fidel Castro, Bernie Grant and Michael Rosen.

The campaigners say that Morris is rightly celebrated for his influence in the worlds of art and design and for his socialist politics and writings but the legacy of his iconic beard has been largely ignored.

Morris was well known for having a fiery temper and huge appetite for work and activism. On his death in 1896 at the age of 62 his physician suggested that the main cause was ‘simply being William Morris’.

Michael Rosen is one of the most well-known beard wearers of the twenty-first century, a former Beard of the Year, an author, broadcaster and Arsenal fan. His beard has been and remains highly influential.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, of course not all beards have changed the world or have done so in a positive sense. However on World Beard Day its appropriate to celebrate the positive impact a beard can make

Prince William has stubble NOT a beard rules Beard Liberation Front

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that it is pleased that Prince William has listened to its guidance not to shave off the holiday beard he grew while staying at Balmoral recently.

However the campaigners say that his appearance at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea last Thursday underlines that at the moment he is pre-beard.

The campaigners say that there is a long standing benchmark for the distinction between stubble and a beard known as the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Western test. In the iconic films Eastwood wears a poncho, smokes a cheroot and has a beard that is deliberately positioned as just post-stubble.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, our message to Prince William is that its a good start and with work a place on the Beard of Autumn vote shortlist could be his

50 years of Norman Stanley Fletcher: Muswell Hill’s finest

In Uncategorized on September 6, 2024 by kmflett

5th September marked the 50th anniversary of the first broadcast of Porridge. The lead character Norman Stanley Fletcher an ‘habitual criminal’ was to be found at HMP Slade in Cumbria. Fletcher was played by Ronnie Barker and the scripts were written by Dick Clement and Ian Le Frenais.

The series ran until 1977

Fletcher resided, when not in jail, in Muswell Hill North London. He would have to have been a rather more effective criminal than he appeared to be to afford a house there in 2024. However if we assume his residence in the 1970s dated from the 1950s or 1960s, house prices were rather less. The area was known for housing BBC employees (the Alexandra Palace link) and members of the Communist Party (not the same thing btw) as the Russian Embassy/Trade Mission was nearby in Highgate. I also lived there myself.

Fletcher was a Spurs fan which was either a factual error by Clement and Le Frenais or a joke. Muswell Hill is on the Arsenal side of Haringey.

Once released from Slade Fletcher ran a pub. He was in the right place for the first Wetherspoons which opened in Colney Hatch Lane N10 (as Marlers) in 1979. I never saw him behind the bar there though

NME pictures of Carnival Against the Nazis, Victoria Park, East London 30th April 1978

In Uncategorized on September 6, 2024 by kmflett

The issue of the New Musical Express published after the Victoria Park Carnival Against the Nazis (6th May 1978) carried a double page spread of photos of the day. The NME’s circulation at the time was 300,000. It was the start of a mass movement from Rock Against Racism to the Anti-Nazi League that isolated the National Front and encouraged and built a very different Britain, based on uniting and fighting racism. It needs to be done again. It can be done, with Love Music Hate Racism and Stand Up to Racism, again
